Québec, home of
MICHEL TREMBLAY
Québec is considered to be one of the most open-minded nations for sexual diversity. It became the first jurisdiction in the Americas to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation in 1977, shortly after homosexuality was decriminalized in Canada in 1969. In 2002, Québec’s National Assembly unanimously legalized civil unions and new filiation rules, going as far as it could before same-sex marriage was legalized in Canada in 2005. In 2009, Québec became one of a few places on Earth to officially adopt a national anti-homophobia policy.
These are just a few examples of how Québec is welcoming to the gay and lesbian community. This is largely thanks to the women and men who have shaped modern Québec as we know it, perhaps one of the most influential being Québec’s most notable author, Michel Tremblay. Tremblay is a pioneering playwright for the gay and lesbian community. He has been showcasing gay, lesbian, bisexual and transvestite characters in his novels, plays and screenplays since the early 1970s. |

To read Tremblay’s body of work is to discover the evolution of Montréal and its LGBT community. It was in Montréal that gay life in Québec firmly planted its roots, to later extend to Québec City, Saguenay, Sherbrooke, Trois-Rivières and the cross-border region of Ottawa/Gatineau.
LGBT and gay-friendly establishments are now accessible in all major city centers. The community network is where you will discover Québec’s friendly atmosphere and natural beauty. At the moment of the 40th anniversary of Pride, we invite you to discover the rich culture, history and diversity of Québec!
